10 Teams That Have Realistic Chances Of Playing The College Football Game

The 2022 college football season is approaching, which means it’s time to finalize our pre-season predictions for the college football game. With a full regular season and a slate of conference championships to pass before the picture becomes any near clear, there are few teams that can really be considered in the race.

Whether they’re regular players with two wins or a newcomer on the College Football Playoff scene, the 2022 season will have some exciting teams and stories to follow.

Here are 10 teams that have realistic chances of playing the college football game before the season begins.

Michigan

Michael Aliu – USA TODAY Sports

Michigan finished the 2022 season with a respectable 12-2 record. The biggest obstacle standing in the way of Wolverines is Ohio. Defeating the Buckeyes and Michigan would have a place in the final four teams. It may be an uphill battle all season, but it’s not impossible.

Miami

Charles Leclair – USA TODAY Sports

Hurricanes in Miami are in the first season of another rebuild program. Mario Cristobal left Oregon to go home and coach “The U.” In 2021, Clemson is nowhere near as dominant as it has been in recent seasons. The ACC may be subject to a shift in power. Could Miami be the program to rise and beat the Tigers to the throne?

8

Oklahoma

Michael C. Johnson – USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma made the playoffs, but never won a semifinal game, and coach Lincoln Riley couldn’t accomplish it during his time in Norman, Oklahoma. However, the Sooners now have head coach Brent Venables and a new-look team. Other programs in the Big 12 have taken big strides in the right direction, so Oklahoma will have to run an undefeated game in the conference for a chance at the playoffs.

USC

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Lincoln Riley couldn’t do this while in Oklahoma, but could a change of location help? Riley moved west to USC and brought in his young star Caleb Williams from the Sooners. Much like the aforementioned Miami, USC is in its first season of rebuilding the program, but that doesn’t mean playoffs are out of the question.

6

Clemson

Bob Donnan USA Today Sports

The 2021 season at Clemson has been unforgettable for everyone not affiliated with the Tigers football program. A 10-3 record for a team that had hopes and dreams of a national championship is devastating. Midfielder DJ Uigalelei has yet to emerge as the star many thought he would be. If he can turn it around in 2022, there’s a good chance Clemson will stay at the helm of the conference and sneak into the College Football Playoff again.

5

Notre Dame

Matt Kashore USA Today Sports

Notre Dame will open the 2022 college football season with a game against Ohio State. Although this game is the first of the season and months away from the final selection of the College Football Committee, it has enormous repercussions. The Buckeyes will be the favourite, but if the Fighting Irish manage to win, the college football scene will be affected for the remainder of the season.

4

Utah

Kirby Lee USA Today Sports

Utes keeps getting closer and closer to a point in the playoffs. After winning the Pac-12 Championship in 2021, there is a good chance Utah can bring it back in 2022. If the team can convincingly win every game, it will be difficult for the committee to leave Utis.

3

Georgia

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

We can’t rule out national champions, can we? Dogs in Athens, Georgia won it all in 2021 behind a historically strong defense. Several influential players from the championship winning team are now in the NFL. Will Kirby Smart have enough firepower to keep up with the other competitors battling for a watershed point?

2

Ohio State

Ken Reynard USA Today Sports

The Buckeyes are considered to be one of the strongest teams in the country heading into 2022. CJ Stroud started out a bit inconsistently in 2021 but turned it around in a big way to finish the season. As last year, many are expecting Stroud to return to New York for the annual Heisman Cup Gala. He’s joined by some dangerous Skill Center players when attacking, which can make even the strongest defenses tense.

1

Alabama

Del Zaneen – USA TODAY Sports

The Crimson Tide didn’t manage to win it all in 2021, but it came very close to it in what many Alabama fans are calling their down year. The return of the majority of the key players on both sides of the ball, as well as the maintenance of both coordinators will be key factors in the success of this team. There aren’t many teams in the state that can rival this Alabama roster, but nothing can be ruled out. Many have already started at Crimson Tide somewhere on the four-team bracket in the College Football Playoff game.
