Apple today released new firmware 5B58 for the original AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, compared to the 4E71 firmware released in May. Apple released firmware 5B58 for the AirPods Pro 2 earlier this week.

Apple doesn’t provide immediately available release notes on what’s included in the updated AirPods‌ firmware updates, but the company does maintain a support document containing the release information. Update 5B58 for ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 added “Bug fixes and other improvements”, with no other details available.

There is no standard way to upgrade AirPods, but firmware is generally installed over the air while AirPods are connected to an iOS device. Putting the AirPods in the case, plugging the AirPods into a power source, then pairing the AirPods to your iPhone or iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check the “AirPods” or “AirPods Pro” firmware by following these steps:

  • Connect your ‌AirPods or ‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Click General.
  • Click on About.
  • Click on “AirPods”.
  • Look at the number next to “Firmware Version”.

If we find noticeable changes after installing firmware updates, we’ll update this article, but the software will likely include performance improvements and bug fixes.
