Detroit Tigers player Victor Reyes is among six players left off a list of 40 players
LAS VEGAS – The Detroit Tigers have reached one of three significant dates.
On Thursday, the Tigers were asked to bring players back from the 60-day infected list and return them to the 40-player roster. Next week, the Tigers must add their young to the 40-man roster on Tuesday to protect them from draft Rule 5, then the deadline for no bids is Friday.
“These decisions are really tough, especially for me,” Scott Harris, chief of baseball operations, said Tuesday at the general manager meetings. “I don’t know these players as most presidents know their players. I count on a lot of people who have been here for a while.”

The Tigers entered the off-season with 10 players on the 60-day injured list: Beau Brieske, Kyle Funkhouser, Rony García, Sean Guenther, Matt Manning, Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Spencer Turnbull, Jake Rogers and Austin Meadows.
All 10 players have been returned to the 40-player roster.
To do this, the tigers had to make several cuts. Six players from the 40-man squad, cleared of concessions, and disqualified from Triple A Toledo: right-handers Luis Castillo, Brian Garcia and Elvin Rodriguez, field players Luis Garcia and Jermaine Palacios and defender Victor Reyes.
Most notable is Reyes.
Reyes, who earned $1.4 million in 2021 and could have been eligible to referee for the second time this off-season, is expected to reject Triple-A Toledo’s direct appointment in favor of a free agency. He was expected to receive $2.2 million in salary arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
The 28-year-old, who the Tigers earned in the 2017 Base 5 draft, could turn down a minor league assignment because he has more than three years of MLB service time. He hit .264 with 49 walks and 287 strikes over the course of 394 games over parts of five seasons.
Brian Garcia could turn down the assignment to Toledo and opt for free agency as well, as he was previously left out in his career. He made 76 games in parts of four MLB seasons. The Tigers picked him in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.
Castillo, Rodriguez and Palacios could become free agents for the minor league, while Luis Garcia – the 22-year-old potential former player who did not qualify for the Palace free agency – will remain with the organization.

The Tigers roster of 40 players currently has 40 players. The Tigers will need to clear additional space on Tuesday to protect players from Draft Rule 5.
On Wednesday, the Tigers removed two spots from the 40-man list. Outfielder’s Dazz Cameron—who played 73 MLB games in parts of three seasons—was awarded concessions from the Baltimore Orioles, and player Josh Lester canceled the concessions and was transferred to Triple-A Toledo.
