What you need to know about Sunday’s MLB games

By Todd Zola

  • Sunday marks the end of Fantasy Week 16, meaning there are just four periods left until the playoffs begin in standard ESPN formats. Games begin at 12:05 PM ET, with Cristian Javier and the Houston Astros closing out the series at Progressive Field against Triston McKenzie and the Cleveland Guardians. Both pitchers are featured on most of ESPN and will be a challenge for opposing hitters. Still, while better this season, Javier has historically been prone to the long ball, making Josh Naylor (58% reported in ESPN leagues) and Nolan Jones (6%) suitable streamers.

  • Hopefully you don’t need a last-minute boost as streaming inventory is light. The top two options meet at Wrigley Field with Jesus Luzardo (26%) pitching for the Marlins and Adrian Sampson (2%) taking the ball for the Cubs. Both lineups are among the most unproductive in the league. Sampson is the safer option, while Luzardo is riskier, but with more potential for ejections. Team needs dictate the choice between the two, and Luzardo is favored by fantasy teams that need breathers or make up a lot of ground.

  • The next top contenders also go head-to-head with Kutter Crawford (7%) and the Boston Red Sox ending the series at Kauffmann Stadium with Brady Singer (30%) and the Kansas City Royals. Singer is the more established hurler, in the midst of a breakthrough campaign, but Crawford draws a lighter line-up. That said, the Red Sox lineup is firing on all cylinders, so consider Singer if you’re behind and need a high strikeout option to make up the pitch.

  • While we’ll obviously have you covered with action notes on Monday, sometimes it helps to plan ahead. There are seven games on Monday, which means the demand to fill roster holes will be high, but the supply will be thin. Grabbing players to use on Sunday and Monday is a great way to stay ahead of the competition. San Diego has a pair of lefties to hit, so targeting righty Ha-Seong Kim (10%), Austin Nola (8%), Wil Myers (6%) and/or Jorge Alfaro (4%) offers double the exposure to a potent lineup . The Angels are also slated to face a pair of lefties featuring Luis Rengiff (5%), Max Stasi (2%), Jo Adell (4%) and Phil Gosselin (

  • Similarly, identifying loved ones with a chance to pick up the bailout on Sunday and Monday could prove prescient. Further, there is quite a long list of possibilities as Felix Bautista, Rowan Wick, Hunter Strickland, Jose Quijada, Zach Jackson, Wil Crowe, Paul Sewald, Kyle Finnegan and Ian Kennedy are all widely available and in action on both days.
