Final Fantasy: The 8 Most Merciless Characters in the Series
Final Fantasy is one of the longest-running video game franchises ever, and it’s extremely successful. This is due to the franchise’s ability to adapt to the market, but more importantly, they have always focused on the basics, the core gameplay, the story and what makes a good story without hating anyone. Final Fantasy it has a long ensemble cast of villains with plenty of tragic mistakes that make players feel bad, your evil kings or CEOs, terrifying otherworldly deities and maniacal monsters.
This list won’t go over how likable the character was, or how much sense their plan made. All that matters is how brutal, merciless and downright wild these guys were. These villains are determined and stubborn, stopping at nothing to get what they want.
8/8 Vayne Carudas – Final Fantasy 12
Big bad thing Final Fantasy 12 was ruthless in every sense of the word. He stopped at nothing to fulfill his ambitions. He mercilessly killed his two older brothers at the behest of his father and used the uprisings in Nabradia as an excuse to invade the region.
Through political maneuvering, he finds himself as a lawyer. When Vayne’s father removes him from this duty, he is found dead in the throne room, the accused culprit conveniently taking his own life. It’s clear that Vayne will stop at nothing to see his plans come to fruition. Vayne’s plans were pretty much missed when it came to villains, but the way he executed them showed his tenacity, while he wasn’t a memorable villain, he was undeniably ruthless.
7/8 Ultimecia – Final Fantasy 8
Sorceress from Final Fantasy 8 he wants to compress all time and space, to make himself a living god – sounds simple enough. To do this, she begins by killing President Deling, tossing his corpse aside as a wrapper. She is cruel and conceited, as her speech after this makes clear.
Ultimecia wants herself to be the center of the universe, and nothing else deserves to live without her. Although her hatred is obvious, to be honest her character is not fleshed out at all and leaves a lot open to player interpretation. Her most iconic scene described above, however, shows her brutality.
6/8 Delita – Final Fantasy Tactics
This may be considered a controversial choice; but his actions speak for themselves, despite all righteous intentions. Delita has a habit of manipulating Ramza, among others, to do his bidding.
Throughout the second act of the play he does whatever he wants and hurts whoever he wants all in pursuit of a higher righteous goal. Finally, let’s not forget how he mercilessly stabbed Princess Ovelia. Delita is an extremely well-written character, but she is a brutal threat.
5/8 Kuja – Final Fantasy 9
The main villain Final Fantasy 9 is a maniacal warmonger who hides behind his silver tongue and endless penchant for metaphors. This egotistical wizard’s slow descent into madness is perfectly written in a way that makes the audience sympathize with him, and some even consider him an anti-hero.
Kuja, however, shows his nefarious intent time and time again and at the end of the day his actions can be boiled down to; the world does not have to exist if Kuja does not thrive in it. Kuja was the catalyst of multiple wars and directly responsible for mass genocide. He burned and completely destroyed Alexandria to further his goal of becoming the master of ‘Tera’ and ‘Gaea’.
4/8 Sephiroth – Final Fantasy 7
Sephiroth is one of the most iconic characters in all of gaming. He is also an absolutely ruthless, brutal villain. While plenty of gamers feel bad for him and feel that some of the blame for his actions lies elsewhere, at the end of the day he did them. While Sephiroth’s background is inside Crisis Core: Final Fantasy are tragic, especially his relationships with Angeal and Genesis, but that doesn’t detract from his impressive resume of brutality. He slaughters everyone on his way to Shinra HQ to save Jenova. Consequently, he burned down the entire town of Nibelheim. Sephiroth kills Tifa’s father and constantly manipulates Cloud throughout the story Final Fantasy 7. Most importantly, let’s not forget how he impaled Aerit.
This summary above doesn’t even go over his actual plans and what he’s doing to achieve them. Sephiroth is one of the best written characters in Final Fantasy to date, but he is as ruthless as he appears and no amount of manipulation by Shinra or Hojo changes that.
3/8 Professor Hojo – Final Fantasy 7
Professor Hojo is the mastermind behind the Genova Project and is connected to every antagonist in the Final Fantasy 7. For him, the only thing that matters is the success of his scientific theories, everything else is just a price to pay. Hojo manipulates Sephiroth leading to a crisis in Nibelheim, later injecting the survivors with samples of Sephiroth’s genetic material in an attempt to further his hypothesis.
Hojo is a sadist and doesn’t care how much destruction he causes in pursuit of his goals, in a way the terror he causes, and his own ruthlessness is rather understated as he stays mostly in the background making him one of the most ruthless villains in the world. franchises, maliciously operating in the dark.
2/8 Emet-Selch – Final Fantasy 14
Emet-Selch is one of the multiple antagonists in Final Fantasy 14 and definitely the most popular. Slech probably has the most lore and history surrounding him of any character on this list, u Final Fantasy 14 Stormblood he reveals that he built the Garlean Empire only to create chaos and summon another Calamity, planning a civil war after the death of his previous ship as a means to that end.
Emmett-Selch’s ruthlessness is evident in the fact that he did not consider killing human beings to be murder, as they were ‘lesser beings’, so all his actions of mass genocide were done mercilessly. A tragic character, marked by loss and grief and fueled by revenge, Selch remains one of the series’ most popular characters, but his ultimate goal is a sickening one.
1/8 Kefka Palazzo – Final Fantasy 6
Kefka is the most fearsome and ruthless villain in the series. This mass killing of harlequins actually succeeded in its ultimate goal at least for a while, essentially destroying the world in a massive cataclysm that killed millions and ruled over its decrepit remains. Kefka’s actions led to the deaths of several important characters in the story, and he led the cult to his own glory. He’s one of the few characters mentioned here with no moral gray areas – he’s all evil.
