Google Pixel 6a review – Best Android phone of 2022?

Shopping for an affordable Android smartphone doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice specs, power, and features. Pixel 6a is proof of that. It gives you fast performance, high-quality cameras and plenty of smart software for under £400 – a phone we’d recommend not just to Android professionals but anyone who tends to jump on the Apple iPhone SE.

Why choose it over Pixel 6? Google has kept the eye-catching design while packing many of this phone’s best features into a smaller, lighter frame. The Pixel 6a has the same processor as the flagship to power its imaging tools, plus the tech giant is promising Android and security updates for years to come.

It is quickly evident that when it comes to looks, so is 6a clearly Pixel phone. The camera bump that runs along the entire width of the rear is back to separate the two-tone color scheme, although it’s been scaled back a bit. We like that the new version is thinner and less dense, laying flat when on a flat surface.

Besides (literally) flashy nothing (1), Pixel phones feature one of the most unique designs of 2022. The glass back of the Pixel 6 has been replaced by plastic in the 6a, but it still looks high-end. One advantage is that the sliding we encountered on the Pixel 6 is no longer a major issue as the 6a can be controlled with one hand.

With a 6.1-inch screen, we wouldn’t call the Pixel 6a a small phone, but it’s clearly smaller than the Pixel 6 and Pro — closer in size than the iPhone 13. So if you find the Pixel 6 too big, this affordable alternative will feel even better. , although you may still want to invest in a case to protect the back panel, which seems easy to scratch. While the camera bump is black on all three Pixel phones, you have three two-tone colors on the 6a, dubbed Sage, Chalk, and Charcoal. This translates to light green/dark green, soft grey/white (which we tested) and light grey/dark grey.

Google Pixel 6a camera

One of the advantages of Pixel phones has always been their ability to take excellent photos with minimal effort – point, click and enjoy. In tests, we found that this didn’t change on the Pixel 6a, despite lowering the primary camera lens from 50MP (MP) to 12.2MP wide angle – so that’s closer (at least on paper) to a Pixel 5. You also get a display 12MP ultra-high resolution on the 6a camera’s rear module, while 8MP selfies are captured.

Our results have been consistently clear and pure. Using the Pixel 6a on a slightly overcast day, we enjoyed the blissful color accuracy on the buildings and the sky. On brighter days, the colors of our garden plants popped onto the vibrant OLED display. If you need a camera for shooting quick snapshots for social media, this has you covered.

The secret sauce, as always, is Google’s machine learning powered by the internal Tensor chip. Like the Pixel 6, it supports quite a few great photography and videography modes. Our favorite is Magic Eraser, which instantly removes unwanted objects from photos—perfect if you’re taking pictures of crowded city landmarks on vacation.

We tested it at the National Gallery in London, removing two people in the frame with a single click. For most eyes, especially on small screens, you won’t be able to tell they were there before. The phone struggles more if tasked with removing large crowds of people, as we discovered during a test in a bustling Chinatown district, with blurry artifacts on the image after editing.

More AI features coming back to this less expensive phone are Face Unblur, which works exactly as it looks and stops blurring of faces in photos, as well as True Tone technology, which makes cameras more effective at accurately showing dark skin tones in photos. The only tool missing is Motion Mode, which adds effects to moving objects, so if that’s the main draw, you’ll have to spend more on the flagship.

There is no point in buying a phone that will not be supported in the future. Fortunately, this is not a problem with 6a. It’s no surprise that Google is the developer of Android, but the Pixel phones are among the first to get new updates, including Android 13 – which is now in beta but expected to be released in the coming weeks. Google is promising Android updates until July 2025 and security updates until July 2027, and that’s further into the future than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro – which are supported until 2026.

The Android 12 software you get out of the box is easy to use and easy to navigate, with nifty customization like the ability to match the color of your icons to your wallpaper, plus live translation back that helps you speak 11 languages or read text you don’t understand from pictures – perfect for your next trip Abroad.

    Google Pixel 6a battery

Google says the Pixel 6a’s battery “can last more than 24 hours,” which is what you might want to buy for a smartphone in 2022. In our tests, we’ve found that the battery drains faster than we’d hoped during a day of heavy use — plenty of updates Programs, about two hours of listening to Spotify on the go to and from work, some YouTube browsing and a handful of game downloads — from 70% at 11:30 a.m. to death by 20:40 p.m. the same day.

The next day we tested lighter use and found the battery performance to be better, so you can definitely get a full day of Pixel 6a battery – if you stick to checking emails or social media and listening to music via Bluetooth to your earbuds or wireless speakers – we don’t recommend Traveling without a charger.

The smartphone uses USB-C for charging and wired headphones but there’s no wall adapter in the box, and a bit unfortunate there’s no wireless charging either.

    Google Pixel 6a screen

If you spend all day looking at the 6a screen, you won’t be disappointed in the vibrant OLED panel, which has great contrast and vibrant colours. When testing, apps and games looked great — and it’s always nice to see the minimal black border around the screen, which looks more modern than older iPhone SE designs.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 6a only has a 60Hz refresh rate, which means scrolling won’t be quite as fluid compared to the flagship models. Fortunately, this was only evident when comparing the Pixel 6a and Pixel 6 screens side by side, and we think you’re unlikely to see much difference during typical daily use.

    Google Pixel 6a performance

If you’re worried that buying an affordable phone means slow performance – don’t worry. Swipe around the Pixel 6a’s list of responsive apps. We downloaded games, including Call of Duty: Mobile And the angry birds 2And they didn’t find problems with how to run. The phone sometimes charges on hot or under extreme stress, but not to the point of concern.

Speed up app downloads and stream even more with the smartphone’s built-in 5G connection – but make sure you have an unlimited data SIM, of course.

    Disadvantages of Google Pixel 6a

No phone is perfect, and the Google Pixel 6a is making some compromises to keep the cost down. Like its siblings, it doesn’t have an SD card slot for storage expansion, so you’re stuck with the primary 128GB unless you use cloud services to save your files and photos.

Google doesn’t support any facial recognition on these devices either, so you’re stuck with the fingerprint sensor, tapping on a number-based password or swiping a pattern to unlock, although we’re happy to report that the fingerprint sensor appears to be more responsive than Pixel 6.

The problem for power users is the limited battery. From tests we found it to be okay for about a day of normal use, but not much more than that. On the plus side, owning one of the best power banks solves that.

    Google Pixel 6a Verdict

With the Pixel 6a, Google faces a tough task: making one of the best Android phones a better value. The Pixel 6 is starting to see discounts (now discounted on Amazon) so the second hurdle is trying not to compete with itself.

Did you succeed? Yes – by packing the processing power and software of a flagship into a smaller frame and offering up to years of software updates, this phone deserves your attention. With a sleek design, high-quality display, and reliable cameras, the Google Pixel 6a is an easy recommendation if your budget can’t go beyond £400.
