Harry Shum Jr. talks about his ‘cool’ turn to podcasts as he stars in psychological thriller Echo Park

Harry Shum Jr. brings his talents to the podcast world.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, cheerful Alum, 40, has opened up about Realm’s starring and production Echo Parka new psychological thriller podcast that tells the fictional story of LAPD civilian counsel (Shum) and his clone Terrance who find themselves entangled in a web of lies, deceit, and murder.

“Just imagine if you’re just doing your job, living your life and facing the problems and stresses that you’re in in your life, and all of a sudden, you’re encountering someone who looks just like you,” says Shum of the plot. “You don’t know them, they are not related to you and they are just your copy. And then, now you are trying to figure out, ‘What am I doing with this person in front of me?'” They became friends with them? And then you discover that they have a secret life, a second life, beyond what’s right in front of you, but you start exploring because now you’re trying to find them.”

“You’re trying to find a version of yourself,” Shum continues. “And that, I think, is really the reason for this story.”

“But there is also an element of crime involved where the murders happen,” he adds. “What I love about this, it also has some social commentary about what life is more important than others. And I think it gives it a bit of science fiction, which is, I think, really cool while listening. You start to think about things from your point of view, [a] A special perspective on life, in general, of your surroundings and your environment.”

With so many projects under his belt, Shum says entering the world of podcasting has been “awesome” to him for many reasons.

“What I love about this genre is that you never know where you’re going,” he shares. “Despite reading all the scripts, I was discovering new things while recording them.”

“It was completely different because I love getting out of bed and going straight to the studio,” he explains. “But, also, to be able to work with our director and production team. We’ve really developed these characters and really taken our time. We were able to talk about it and you didn’t think, ‘OK, we’re waiting for certain departments or hundreds of people trying to make this one thing” he is Wonderful and beautiful. But I love that making this was so intimate.”

“I was able to express multiple personalities and try to really expand, have them become their own, but I also have a vast world that feels intimate at the same time that was really beautiful,” he adds.

While Shum has been enjoying the process, he admits he’s faced some challenges – but nothing has changed.

“I’m a very physical representative and love fitness,” he says. “And so you have to guide that through the voice, through the intent, through the subtleties between how the characters talk to each other, but also find that dynamic in me.”

But the dialogue and the story is very beautifully written [we] He wouldn’t really need to make major adjustments outside of the experiment,” he notes. This is the part I love. We got it wrong in so many ways until we finally fix it.”

Echo Park Now available wherever podcasts are broadcast. The podcast, also available to Realm+ and Realm Unlimited subscribers, will drop new episodes every week until October 13.
