A press release states that the book “reveals the many ways humans play in the form of six universal themes: ancient ritual, rites of passage, business, pain, wholeness and sacredness.” “It reveals the original and often extreme ways people use sport to express their identity in some of the most surprising stadiums on the planet.”

The press release adds, “This book isn’t just about sports; it’s about tradition, skill, perseverance, honor and ultimately about what makes us human.”

While the book and series examine surfers who travel to Portugal to hunt the biggest waves on earth, Nigerian dam fighters and Mongolian nomadic eagle hunters, Elba tells People he found himself more interested in trying the Dutch sport of fierljeppen, which he wrote about in the book. It describes the “oldest and most traditional sport” in the Netherlands.

Elba says of the sport, which originated centuries ago as a practical way for farmers to cross the waterways of central Europe. “They run up the pole and then jump as far as they can. I’d like to give it a try. It looks like a lot of fun, you have to be really strong and agile.”

For Elba, his main takeaway from the series “is that people can find so many creative ways to really challenge themselves, and I find that fascinating.”

“I think when we leave the playground when we were kids, kids, on recess or whatever, or go to the park just to kick a ball or whatever, when we stop doing that as adults, a piece of us dies,” Elba told People. “But it’s not completely dead because you can activate it again to go out and expand.”
