Rumors suggest that upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will feature an always-on display technology similar to the Apple Watch, and that could be hints of what this always-on display might look like in the latest Xcode 14 beta.

As noted on Twitter by Mac rumors contributor Steve MoserXcode 14 beta features an interesting lock screen interface that eliminates details from an on-screen widget while the screen is active. The animation indicates that iPhone 14 Pro models can remove intricate details from widgets and other lock screen contents when the iPhone is locked and the always-on screen is active.

The latest version of iOS 16 features hints about the “sleep” state of wallpapers, providing more information about how the always-on display works. “Sleep” versions of wallpapers are darker and fade in brighter colors, which probably saves battery life when used with an always-on display.

The always-on display functionality is rumored to be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max because these devices will have the necessary display technology. Rumors indicate that the iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max will feature refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, which is an improvement over the 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rates available with the iPhone 13 Pro devices.

A refresh rate of 1 Hz will allow time, widgets, and possibly notifications to be displayed while the iPhone‌ is idle. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models are also rumored to get an uncut design that instead uses punch-hole cutouts in the shape of faceplates and camera hardware, improved rear cameras, and an A16 chipset, with full details available in our dedicated iPhone 14 Pro roundup.
