J Balvin is creating a space for the Latinx community to make mental health a priority.

Speaking to PEOPLE about launching OYE, the first-ever bilingual wellness app for the Latinx community, the Colombian star—who is OYE’s chief dream officer—opened up about his mental health struggles and why he wants others to feel comfortable talking about them.

“[Mental health] It’s definitely a really big taboo in Latin — macho maybe — but it’s just not cool anymore, the “Azul” singer, 37, told People. “I think you’re macho when you show that you’re weak—it’s not that you don’t show that you’re weak, it just shows that you’re human and that you have your ups and downs.”

He continues, “When I see my favorite artist talking about the human side, I feel so proud of that person because you can see that behind this huge artist or that huge person that you love, it’s someone just like us.”

For Balvin, being part of a project like OYE hits close to home because he’s lived with depression and anxiety since he was young.

“I didn’t know what it was and didn’t know I had poor health in general until I started talking about it,” he says. “It was nice to see how many lives we saved when I started talking about mental health.”

Then he realized that talking about it was not enough – he wanted to do more. When OYE was introduced to him, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to help people.

The app is available in both English and Spanish and aims to help people feel better by unleashing their creativity and channeling emotions through creative actions. It features emotional check-ins, goal-setting exercises, and mindful notifications. After the free trial, subscriptions start at $4.99 per month.

“There are a lot of people nowadays who consider their mobile phone the only way to express themselves,” says the “Mi Gente” singer. “Because sometimes they’re afraid to talk about their feelings with other people. Well, it’s sad. And that’s why we have OYE, because it’s not just about me anymore. It’s about us.”

He adds, “When you have a happy neighbor, it lights up the whole room. You know what I’m saying? So we need more happy people to make the world better.”

In Balvin’s view, this is a step in the right direction — but it’s just the beginning of making mental health a daily topic.

He adds, “We have to start making this conversation normal, [like we] We talk about football and basketball. This is my part. My part of this beautiful journey for OYE and my partners, is that it’s an extension of myself and myself.”
