Man City beat Chelsea in the Arsenal match and Tottenham were eliminated from the League Cup
Manchester City increased the pressure on Graham Potter with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea to advance to the League Cup last 16 on Wednesday, with Arsenal and Tottenham downed.
Arsenal lost 3-1 at home to Brighton, while Tottenham lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest despite Harry Kane starting.
Defending champions Liverpool also escaped a panic as they needed a penalty shootout to beat the First Division derby after a 0-0 draw at Anfield.
City won the battle of two much-changing teams at Al Ittihad with Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez scoring twice in five minutes of the second half to put Pep Guardiola’s men into the next round.
Mahrez curled a superb free kick from the edge of the penalty area to break the deadlock after a tight first 45 minutes.
Alvarez then took another opportunity to start against Erling Haaland by scoring his third goal in as many matches on the back post after Mahrez was rejected.
“Julian is an exceptional player,” Guardiola said.
“Of course he has to fight against perhaps the best striker in the world, Erling, but Julian shows many things he can do.”
It kept Arsenal City away from the top of the Premier League, but won’t add the League Cup for the first time since 1993 after Brighton continued their impressive transformation under Roberto de Zerbe.
Eddie Nketia’s fine touches put the hosts ahead in the Emirates, but a slip from goalkeeper Karl Hein on his Arsenal debut gave Danny Welbeck a chance to equalize with a penalty against his old club.
Kaworu Mituma’s powerful finishing touch turned the equalizer before Tariq Lamptey scored 19 minutes from time.
“We’re out, it’s already done, and now we have to focus on the Premier League, which is the priority,” said Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.
England coach Gareth Southgate may have been dismayed to see Kane start at the City Ground the night before his team was named to the World Cup.
The England captain finally got his last half-hour rest, but only when Antonio Conte threw in the towel with his 2-0 side.
Renan Lodi penetrated inside into his weaker right foot to hit a superb opening ball early in the second half before Jesse Lingard scored his first goal for Forrest.
– Kelleher Liverpool champion –
Caoimhin Kelleher was Liverpool’s hero for most of last season as the Reds goalkeeper saved three penalties in the derby.
Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes and it showed that a young team is struggling to make their possession count.
Roberto Firmino and Darwin Nunez failed to find a winner after coming forward with 25 minutes left, and Firmino ended a bad week after being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad with a penalty kick over the bar in a penalty shootout.
But Kelleher, who scored the winning penalty kick in last year’s final, made sure of Liverpool’s lead.
Newcastle also needed a penalty shootout to overtake Crystal Palace after their 0-0 draw at St James’ Park.
Nick Pope will be in Southgate’s squad for Qatar and has shown he can be called up if needed in the penalty shootout by saving three of Palace’s five kicks.
Neither goalkeeper managed to save any of the 20 penalties in the London Stadium, where Blackburn was knocked out by West Ham.
And the equalizer tied 2-2 after 90 minutes, as Ben Brereton Diaz tied two minutes before the end in favor of Rovers.
Blackburn converted 10 penalties and qualified when tonight’s West Ham captain Angelo Ogbona hit the crossbar.
Boubacar Traore’s goal five minutes from time gave Wolves a 1-0 win over Leeds.
Meanwhile, Southampton qualified on penalties over Sheffield Wednesday after a 1-1 draw against Nathan Jones, who is expected to be named as the new Saints coach on Thursday.
