Meet the 2022 US World Cup team

The US Men’s National Team (USMNT) is an underdog at this year’s Men’s World Cup in Qatar, and yet it’s an exciting group to encourage. As head coach Greg Berhalter said in a statement, “We believe we have a talented group, a strong team spirit, and one that is ready to compete. We are incredibly proud and honored to represent the United States and appreciate all the incredible support from our fans as we head to Qatar.”

Here, as the USMNT prepares to take on England in the group stage, get to know the 26-man squad. They hail from just nine different countries (and two foreign countries). There are five fathers, one son to a sitting president, and the first player from Colorado to represent the United States in the Men’s World Cup. All of them (with one exception) are on Instagram, and many of them are playing abroad in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and elsewhere.

Birthplace: Medford, New Jersey

Club team: Leeds United

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: He’s the second most expensive American player ever, paying Leeds (in the Premier League) $29.5 million earlier this year. His teammate, Christian Pulisic, is even more expensive: Pulisic’s $73 million transfer to Chelsea in 2019.

Fun fact: He was born to a Japanese father and a Puerto Rican mother, which makes him eligible to play for Japan or the USAF.

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: He turned pro at the age of 16. His dad, Darryl, would text him at halftime at every one of his games with his thoughts. According to a profile in the athleteDarryl said, “Tyler always reads those notes before coming back for the second half. On the rare occasions when Darryl doesn’t write—mostly when he’s watching on the field and cell reception is poor—Tyler can become visibly agitated.”

Birthplace: Southend-on-Sea, England

Club Team: Celtic

Position: Defender

Fun fact: His father, Howard Carter, had a brief career in the NBA, before moving to France, and ended up obtaining French citizenship to represent France in international competitions. His mother is from Essex, but met his father in Greece, grew up in the UK and now plays in Scotland. However, he chose to represent the United States internationally.

Fun fact #2: He is the first player from a Scottish club to be included in the US World Cup squad.

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: his parents are both scientists. His mother, Ann Pang, is the director of stem cell biology at the Conrad Priebes Center for Chemogenomics, and his father, Juan de la Torre, is a professor in the department of immunology and microbiology at Scripps.

Position: forward

Fun fact: Like some of his teammates, he has a very multicultural background. He was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and an American father of Surinamese descent.

Fun Fact #2: He is the first American to play in El Clásico (Barcelona v Real Madrid).

Position: forward

Fun fact: He moved to Dallas when he was 10 years old, when his father, David Ferreira, signed with FC Dallas – the team Jesus now plays for.

Fun Fact #2: In his spare time, Ferreira raises horses, chickens, goats, and alpacas on his ranch. He is an aspiring zoologist.

Fun fact: He’s the first person from Colorado to be named to a USMNT World Cup roster. There have been three Colorado natives in the USWNT: Mallory Pugh, Lindsey Horan, and April Heinrich.

Fun fact: His parents are Jamaican, and he holds both American and Jamaican citizenship. Johnson played football in college – he attended the University of Central Florida, but left early to enter the 2010 draft.

Fun fact: He’s a dad! Aaron has a two-year-old daughter, Kaya, with his wife, Elise.

Fun fact #2: He played four years of college football at UC Riverside.

Fun fact: He started playing sports at the age of six, when his father served in the US Army at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. When former USMNT stars Landon Donovan and Carlos Bocanegra visited Ramstein Air Force Base, he knew he could play for the United States internationally.

Position: Defender

Fun fact: His parents, Wendell and Michelle Goddard-Moore, are from Trinidad and Tobago, and so Moore was eligible to play for the United States or the Caribbean nation. His father, Wendell, played for the Trinidad national team, as did his uncle, Richard Goddard.

Fun fact: He created the Jordan Morris Foundation to support children with type 1 diabetes. Morris himself was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9, and is one of the few professional soccer players to have T1D. “I am fortunate to be given this platform,” he said. “I would like to reach as many young people with diabetes as possible, to show them that T1D should not stop them from achieving their dreams.”

Fun fact #2: He was eligible to represent England, Ghana and Italy And the United State. Born in the Bronx to Ghanaian parents, he was raised in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy, and moved to London, England at the age of nine, in 2012.

Fun fact: He met his wife, Christine Sapienza, while they were both playing soccer at Saint Louis University. They have three kids, and they take very cute family photos.

Fun fact #2: At only 35 years old, he’s the oldest player on the team, and the eighth oldest player ever to be named to a USMNT World Cup roster.

Fun fact: He comes from a family of soccer stars. His father, Claudio Reyna, has 112 caps for the US Soccer Federation, playing in four different World Cup tournaments. Claudio was also the captain of the USMNT in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He is considered one of the best USMNT players of all time. His mother, Danielle Egan, played in the USWNT, and won four national championships at the University of North Carolina with teammate, Mia Hamm.

Fun fact: his father is from Guatemala and his mother is from El Salvador. Both of his two brothers are also in the football world; His younger brother, Alex, is a teammate for the Seattle Sounders, and his older brother, Cesar, is the head athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Galaxy. But Alex chose to play for El Salvador and is in the El Salvador national football team.

Fun fact: His father, George Weah, was the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or, soccer’s top award. George played in Liberia, worked in politics – he is currently the President of Liberia. Tim was eligible to represent the United States, France, Jamaica (his mother is Jamaica), or Liberia, but he chose the United States

Fun fact: DeAndre Yedlin is the only player with previous World Cup experience. He was part of the USMNT’s team at the 2014 Championships in Brazil. He is also the oldest player in the team, having participated in 75 matches (participation in international competitions) in the World Cup.

Fun fact #2: Like a few of his teammates, he’s also a dad. He has a daughter, Seneca, with partner Crystal Rodriguez.
