The Trojans didn’t fully wait for sunrise before beginning their first training of the 2022 season. Excitement and anticipation fueled the team’s early start on Friday (August 5), as a new era of USC football began.

“It’s been a long way for this group to get to this point,” head coach Lincoln Riley He said by following the team’s opening practice. “This group has been challenged in many different ways, and they keep responding.”

While the Trojans wore only T-shirts and helmets on Friday, the lack of sanitary pads did not affect the team’s density. Sweat was constantly dripping from the players who trained as if it was in the middle of camp and not on the first day.

“I think you’re just creating this next anticipation,” Riley explained. “We’ve been crushing on these guys all spring. We had a really tough summer. They were ready to come here. I don’t think anyone was shocked by the speed of the training or the number of reps we took, or even the physique even though we didn’t have pads.”

It was a successful first practice in Riley’s eyes, but the head coach was quick to note that there was a long way to go until the team was ready for prime time.

“The [team’s] Execution was good on day one; It wouldn’t be good for day two, Riley said. You just have to keep climbing. You have to keep building.”

“Enough to be excited,” Riley said with a laugh, “but we’re not going home now. We still have a little work to do.”
