Seattle Seahawks 2022 fantasy football outlook: Who will step up in the post-Russell Wilson era?

The Seattle Seahawks made it clear they are in rebuilding mode after trading away their franchise quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason.

The Wilson trade saw the Seahawks acquire more players and draft picks, which should help them down the stretch, but their performance this season doesn’t appear to be a priority for Geno Smith and Drew Lock is fighting for the starting quarterback position.

Smith served as Wilson’s backup last season and is the current favorite to start, but showed little upside as the starter last season, and Lock has been extremely shifty throughout his career and is unlikely to make an impact even if he takes the job by Smith.

The offense as a whole is set up for a significant hit unless a veteran like him Jimmy Garoppolo or Sam Darnold has been acquired, but none come close to Wilson, making the Seahawks quarterback situation one to avoid even in superflex leagues.

The running game is set to be the focal point of the offense with the passing game in transition, and Rashaad Penny is set to take over as the starter after a strong run last season with current starter Chris Carson out with a neck injury.

While Penny has shined for fantasy managers when it matters most, he has been extremely injury prone throughout his career and will have to give up a promising rookie Kenneth Walker for an entry-level job.

Walker will most likely start as Penny’s backup, but should see more carries as the year progresses and could take over as a workhorse if Penny is gone from DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer not much of a threat to carry.

Walker is the only Seahawks skill player I’m targeting in drafts, as the receiving corps is ready for a big hit even though they have a couple of Pro Bowl wideouts DK Metcalf and TYler Lockett.

Metcalf should still be fantasy relevant as a consistent starter, but his current fourth-round draft price is too high for my taste considering he was inconsistent last season even with Wilson.

Lockett’s numbers will also drop in what will be his first season without Wilson, making him more of a fantasy bench player than a starter, with a second year of scoring Dee Eskridge potentially has some value if an injury to one of the first two occurs.

Noah Fant was acquired as part of the Wilson deal and could be a solid streaming option, but his upside will be limited in this offense as a first-time, mysteriously paid backup Will Disley a significant amount of money although he offers little as a receiver.

The The Seahawks defense he’s not in as bad shape as a forward, but he probably won’t be consistent enough for fantasy lineups and hitting Jason Myers not worth drafting because his options will likely be limited in one of the league’s worst offenses.

Last place in the NFC West gives the Seahawks a slightly lighter schedule than their division rivals, but they are still above average in offense, ranking 11th in the NFL with a .517 strength of schedule.

The Seahawks’ fantasy playoff slate gets off to a rocky start in Week 15 against the 49ers, but gets easier with matchups against the Chiefs in Week 16 and the Jets in Week 17.
