Stix golf clubs are a great and affordable solution to getting into (or back in) the game.

I’ve been playing golf for a very long time. I signed up for my first summer of junior golf when I was 10, and ended up playing one season in high school, hitting the field a lot throughout college, as well as in the first few years after graduation. The game has been a part of my life for over 20 years; I have no idea if I can calculate the total rounds I played, but I bet it’s a lot.

Having said that, I haven’t actually played a full round in a long time — at least, until recently. When I moved to New York, I came by plane, so bringing my clubs from the West Coast wasn’t really an option — or at least, a priority. (I’ve slowly lost about half of my irons and a couple of pegs over the years, anyway.) It’s been a problem, but golf is expensive—and not exactly accessible in New York City for someone who doesn’t own a car. So I lived with her – or rather without her.

A few months ago, I was invited on an adidas golf trip in Whistler, BC, and decided it would be the best way to spend the better part of the week in late September. It lived up to all my expectations – and gave me the golf bug again. As my plane was nearing its end from JFK, all I could think of was reviving my game…

…which left me a problem. I still don’t have clubs here.

This is where I turned into Stix Golf.

Described as the perfect way to get into a game of golf – or Back In golf, in my case – Stix makes high quality, affordable golf clubs that look great and play just as well. You can get a complete set like the one I tested, which comes with 14 paddles, or you can get a set of 11, a set of 9, a barbell set, or even individual wedges. (You can now also buy slightly used sets for a discount, which is an affordable way to purchase a set of clubs.)

At first, this sounded too good to be true. But is it really? I put a whole bunch to the test to find out.

What’s so good about Stix golf clubs?

They come straight to your doorstep in a few days.

I’ve never had great clubs – in fact, this is the first kit I’ve ever had that wasn’t used. I used irons from the ’80s for the first five or six years of my golfing life before I finally got some used Callaway irons from eBay in high school, which fit perfectly with my drivers and wedges. They were nice, but they were hard-riding and laid down wet.

With that in mind, receiving a box of Stix at my door and stripping the bubble wrap off the putter heads was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve had in golf. I experienced a lot of things here at GP, but this was really like Christmas morning. (I think my girlfriend rolled her eyes at least a few times when I was ripping the package to shreds.) I know fast charging and a fun unpacking experience feels like a given 2022, but I didn’t expect the process to go so smoothly.

It’s really fun to hit and it helps eliminate bugs.

At my “peak” I was probably 15 disabled, although I may have approached 20 to 22 during my adult life. (I guess I somehow got it worst During that year of high school golf, but that’s a story for a different day.) It’s safe to say that I needed an iron to improve the game to get the most out of my golf rounds.

Game-improving irons, if you’re not familiar, are a subset of clubs that you won’t find in the pro’s bag, but will help you get to the pro shot now and then thanks to their forgiving and great locations. Stix irons have been exactly that for me. The first time I handled the ball with a Stix iron, I felt confident—even more confident than when I lined up a few shots in Canada with my TaylorMade rentals.

This is true for the actual swing as well. Although my grades were, ImportantToo bad, I’ve hit more powerful rounds of golf in my first two Stix clubs than I’ve had in the past five years. (This is your daily reminder to practice your posture, something I’ve obviously been neglecting.) From the driver across the 60-degree wedge, the Stix clubs are fun to hit and instill a level of confidence I didn’t expect. As you might imagine, the racket was, to me, a different story, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

The complete set costs less than $1,000.

Yes, I signed up for 14 clubs for just $999 (and sometimes less, thanks to the frequent deals on the Stix website). This means you get driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 4-hybrid, 5-PW, 52° wedge, 56° wedge, 60° wedge and paddle. I have Start I had a full bag of clubs before, even when playing competitively, and during the first two rounds I had already used every club in the bag.

For the average golfer, having a cudgel for every shot is a godsend; No more trying to harden the throwing wedge at 160 yards, tiger-style, only to take a gap as big as a serving board and drop the ball in front of you 20 yards (okay, maybe that’s just me). You get all of these clubs, plus woodland and hybrid headgear – making it one of the best values in the game, whether you’re just starting out or joining the ranks of Weekend Warriors like myself.

What is less than ideal in Stix golf clubs?

Headgear is rather poor.

For all this value, there are sure to be some pitfalls. In this case, the pitfalls begin with the headgear. I understand that for such an affordable set, the brand might want to cut costs elsewhere, but these covers are, simply put, too dreadful.

There’s basically no padding, and it’s very difficult to put it on the head of the paddle the right way. This is frustrating when you try to return the headgear to every tee box throughout the round, not to mention a nuisance to the players around you who are just trying to move on. I immediately replaced the driver’s headcover with one from Malbon, and am currently looking at a few to replace the driveway wood and hybrid headcovers as well.

The racket leaves something to be desired on the green.

I had the privilege of having a Scotty Cameron racket, albeit a secondary user, in high school, so that meant I was hitting the greens to the best of my ability at a young age. This isn’t normal for every golfer, so take this with a grain of salt, but it only took a few times of heating with a Stix putter to know it was going to be a problem. The ball jumps off the face as if it were a triple iron, making it very difficult to get tricked touch Required to avoid three and four strikes. I also prefer a steel shaft over the paddle, although I understand why it has a graphite shaft like the rest of the clubs.

Golf Stix Clubs: Verdict

I love these clubs. Sure, there are some flaws to contend with, but it’s easy to forgive when I look in my bag and see a whole bunch of clubs I’m happy to play for. It comes in two clean, satisfying colorways that won’t make you look like an amateur, and the actual club design is second to none, especially at this price point. You can choose from three well-explained shaft bends on the website, so there’s no confusion about what you’ll need. You can also buy longer or shorter rackets, depending on your height.

If you just played golf, buying a set of Stix will save you the headache of fragmenting a whole bag and will save you a lot ton From cash up front – the money you’ll need for thousands of range balls that will inevitably end up hitting those first few months (okay, years) of your golf career. If you get Back In golf, these are indulgent clubs that should put you back on par in no time as well.
