Women’s golf climbs to sixth place – University of Washington and Lee

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida — The University of Washington and Lee women’s golf team has climbed seven places in the Women’s Coaches Golf Association (WGCA) as the association announced Friday afternoon.

Blue and White scored 227 points in the coaches’ vote to jump from 13th in the pre-season poll to 6th after the competition’s opening weekend.

The rise in ranks comes on the heels of a wonderful weekend for the generals. The W&L team earned a third-place finish and singles title at the NCAA Division III Women’s Fall Preview in two rounds at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

A student in his second year of study shillmer (Dallas, TX/Highland Park) won her first group singles title in a 95-woman national field on Monday afternoon, claiming the title of Old Dominion Women’s Sports Golfer of the Week after hitting five hoops and scoring 24 mares during a preview. He was the best performer in terms of all three points (2.75 on average, -2). Schilmer, who was under 71 in the second round, tied for the second lowest 18 holes of the tournament.

Marcela Mercer (Bigfork, MT/Flathead) was among the top 20 riders with a score of 77-75-152 (+8), finishing 11th. The sophomore scored the team’s top six birdie and topped the field with a score of 5 (average 4.63, -3).

The Generals improved by two places on the final day of the tournament and tied for third place in the team’s scoring. The team turned in a 306-306 card to finish 39 on a par.

The University of Redlands, originally named No. 7 in a pre-season poll, saw a similar jump in the rankings after winning the team title at El Campeon Golf Course. The Bulldogs had 287 points and tied first with Emory University, which did not compete in the preview.

The University of Texas at Dallas, which claimed second place with 217 votes, moved up to eighth from previously ranked 20th.

Washington and Lee will return to The Shirt Box in Montgomery, Ala. next weekend for the MCC Intercollegiate hosted by Huntingdon College on Saturday, September 24 through Monday, 26.
